Lets be Unreasonable!

Being Unreasonable can be hard for the brain!

As we step into the season of spring, it’s a natural time to reflect on how we’re growing and what areas of our lives we’d like to stretch and expand. For me, this season is all about spontaneity. It’s an area that can be challenging to embrace, especially when my brain is so used to planning and having control over every situation. As a self-proclaimed planner, I find it tough to do things on a whim or step outside of the comfort zone that my routines and habits create.

But I’ve found that stretching myself in this way is incredibly rewarding. One of the practices many of my clients and I are exploring right now is to do something unreasonable every day. It may sound simple, but the brain often resists this kind of disruption to our normal routine. We feel uncomfortable, but if we push through, that discomfort leads to a spark of energy and excitement that only comes from stepping outside the usual.

The key is to make these actions small and manageable. For example:

  • Wear mismatched socks

  • Take a different route to work

  • Give a stranger a compliment

  • Greet everyone you pass during your morning walk

  • Dance in your kitchen while cooking dinner

These small shifts in our everyday lives can open us up to new possibilities and help us embrace the unknown. By challenging ourselves in little ways, we make it easier to embrace larger changes when they come our way.

Remember, if we’re trying to intentionally write the next chapter of our lives, we need to become comfortable with new realities. Change takes practice, and the more we practice, the easier it becomes to lean into the unknown and shape our lives with purpose.
